A solid gold bomb just dropped on the FuMP...

"Scud"
The newest song from the great Luke Ski,

This is a song about what is in my opinion, the greatest comic book ever, "Scud The Disposable Assassin", created by Rob Schrab.

Rob and I used to take improv classes together in Milwaukee. Rob is one of the original members of "The Dead Alewives", giving him the distinct infamy of being 'the Mountain Dew guy' in the world renowned "Dungeons & Dragons" sketch. During Scud's original mid-90's run, he moved to L.A., where his growing Hollywood workload made him decide to stop "Scud" at issue #20 with an armageddon-implying cliffhanger. Rob went on with his comedy partners to create such cool things as the pilot "Heat Vision And Jack" which starred Jack Black and was directed by Ben Stiller, "Robot Bastard", "Channel 101", "Acceptable TV", "Monster House", "The Hell O'clock News" for Tenacious D, he directed a video for Death Cab for Cutie, and he is the co-creator and director of "The Sarah Silverman Program". A decade later, Rob felt it was finally time to finish what he'd started, and created issues 21 through 24 of "Scud", which at long last finishes the story. Image Comics released them over the summer, and today released "Scud The Disposable Assassin: the Whole Shebang", an 786 page Omnibus containing all 24 issues, available at your local comic shop now. Rob also announced a Scud fan film contest at his website, RobSchrab.com, and has already gotten some great entries.

I have been wanting to do a song about "Scud" ever since I started making music in '94. The song's time has finally come. Many of my fans have told me that they would have never seen a movie or started watching a TV show if I hadn't done a song about it that peaked their interest in it. My "Scud" song is my ultimate expression of attempting to achieve that desired effect. The comic book "Scud" is the coolest thing in my life that most other people don't know about. So as well as paying tribute to something that has meant so much to me over the past 14 years, I hope you'll go pick up a copy of the Omnibus and get sucked into the world of "Scud". And FYI, I am going to attempt to make a music video for this song before the end of the month for the Scud fan film contest.

The opening and closing music for the song is by Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad, with vocals by Chris and Carrie Dahlby. What else left is there to say about it, other than... ...It's cool to be a robot.

SatyaPriya's Steak-eating expedition
The Mercury has been recommended as a good place to go and get buffalo or elk steak. I will need help. I'm usually vegetarian, and thus only wish to consume a small amount of this, just to say I've done it. Who's coming with me? Meet in the foyer of the con hotel at 6pm, and it seems my only free evening is Sunday the 10th, unless we choose to go at lunchtime.

The Cocktail expedition: did we agree on a place and a time and place to meet for this one?

Look for the short, Australian redhead.

good news (and boy did I need it!)...
So... this whole move/paint/remodel thing has started costing rather more than I'd expected, and it's all gonna work out okay but I was about to be in a short-term cash crunch. Opened the mail today and there was an envelope from CDI, where I'd had my shoulder MRI done, and I thought "Oh good grief... we've been through this, darnit... I've paid you!" and one from my former mortgage company.

The first one had a $310 refund for an overpayment, and the second one had an almost $900 refund from my escrow account. Sweet!

Sometimes it actually pays to open the mail. :-)

In case your hovercraft is full of eels, here's how to say that in many languages.

For you SF writers out there, try using material from the last link the next time your characters annoy you.

Amusingly, mine are locking their hovercrafts right now. As if that will save them.

Haunted Houses of Denver walking tour set up for Thursday, August 7
I contacted Denver History Tours (which is not associated with Denvention 3) and set up a ghost walk for the evening of Thursday, August 7. Anyone with the like interest of hearing about the history of Denver and its ghost stories is welcome. The rate is $20 for adults, $10 for children. We meet at the Mile Hile Steps of the Capital Building—the info on the Denver History Tours website about the Brown Palace Hotel is outdated. The tour starts at 8 p.m. and lasts about 2 hours.

I look forward to meeting more Denventioneers there!

Tadpoles!
Today I visited with [info]stonetalker. I took her the batch of cucumber-mint sorbet, which she loved, and a baggie full of rosehips.

In return I got a jar full of several dozen tadpoles. I love tadpoles because it's so much fun watching them metamorphose. Plus they eat algae as babies and insects as adults, so they're wonderful to have around. These are in various stages of development; some have their back legs showing. They look like American toad tadpoles. They're very cute. I poured them into my water gardens where they seem very happy.

A SINGER FROM OUT ON THE COAST
A happiest of birthdays to [info]vixyish, among the finest songwriters of my acquaintance. And quite a fine human as well.

* I would have no excuse for forgetting Vixy's birthday, 'cause mine is, yeeks, tomorrow, in which I turn, yeeks, 39. I don't give numbers a lot of power, but "40" kind of looms on the horizon like a middle-aged Godzilla or somethin'. *

- Subject line snagged from Vixy & Tony's "Siren Song," of course. Their CD Thirteen should be heard by all sentient beings.

Nature Has Rights!
I'm delighted by this piece of news:

July 10, 2008
Ecuadorian Assembly Approves Constitutional Rights for Nature
On July 7, the 130-member Ecuador Constitutional Assembly, elected countrywide to rewrite the country’s Constitution, voted to approve articles that recognize rights for nature and ecosystems.
“If adopted in the final constitution by the people, Ecuador would become the first country in the world to codify a new system of environmental protection based on rights,” says Thomas Linzey, Executive Director of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund.

I hope that this is swiftly approved, and that other countries follow the example set by Ecuador.

Review: Chelsea Green Guides
Biking to Work by Rory McMullan. Chelsea Green, 2008.

Greening Your Office: From Cupboard to Corporation: An A-Z Guide by Jon Clift & Amanda Cuthbert. Chelsea Green, 2008.

Chelsea Green publishes a series of guides, each featuring a different aspect of environmental awareness. These handy little booklets explain how to use energy and resources in cleaner, more efficient ways for a healthier culture and planet.

Biking to Work first lists the benefits and how to tell if biking will be practical for you. Then it covers buying an appropriate bike and other things you’ll need. It explains how to get started, including basic bike maintenance. There is a detailed discussion of biker-friendly features that a workplace can have, useful not just to employees but also to employers wishing to encourage this practice. Finally, the book discusses biking as recreation and offers leads for further information.

Greening Your Office is aimed at individuals and companies who desire to improve their workplace’s use of energy and resources. It’s organized alphabetically by topic. There are tips on reducing waste, converting to Earth-friendly materials, and making sustainable choices. Especially useful are the sections on renewable energy and new construction – those move a company away from dependence on nonrenewable resources.

Remember always that the economy and the environment are not in conflict; rather, the economy is a subset of the environment. Thus, the economy can only thrive in a healthy environment. These two books offer concrete steps, ranging from simple to challenging, that people can take toward a sustainable society. Most highly recommended.

Travels with Plink and Cthulhu: Portlanded
Well, here I am. The afternoon has been filled with wonderful conversations. My seatmate on the plane, a student at SJ State interning in the marketing department of an open source company, and here to work their booth. A woman on the train, going to OSCon for the first time now that her company has gone open source.

The woman handing out badges and bags, who turns out to be a long-time Tolkein fan -- she told me about the badge ribbons they've started using and I mentioned that I was familiar with them from SF conventions. (I added one of my CC&S ribbons left over from Baycon.) A guy in the hall with a home-made PVC-pipe didgeridoo.

MaryBeth Panagos, business relations person for OpenMediaNow.org, the people behind the GNASH flash clone, which it turns out is optimized for use in embedded systems, making it ideal for things like user interfaces on gadgets. Turns out she has a copy of my CD; we mostly talked about recording and my upcoming projects. We apparently met last year when I had preorder bonus disks in hand.

Yeah, I'm a little different these days. But only a little. I still have trouble with phones, and have yet to get in touch with didn't even leave a message when I called [info]_amethyst_fire_ to give her contact info for this weekend</del>. I'll try a couple more times tonight. But she called me back anyway! Today has been made of win, with awesome sauce.

And I'm still really bad with names.

Election Fraud
I was darkly amused to see these two articles side by side:

Michael Collins | Election Fraud and Tyranny: Part 1
Michael Collins, in a Scoop News column: "Mark Crispin Miller's new book, 'Loser Take All,' identifies and analyzes election fraud, the foundation of extremist power in the United States since 2000. Manipulated elections have enabled everything we've experienced from the Iraq war to the current economic meltdown. None of that would have been possible without the ongoing series of 'surprise' wins for extremists and their enablers following the outright theft of the 2000 presidential election."

Zimbabwe: Mugabe Succumbs to Pressure and Starts Secret Talks With Opposition
Chris McGreal, of The Guardian UK: "The rival claimants to victory in Zimbabwe's widely criticised presidential elections - Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai - have agreed to immediately begin intensive talks aimed at establishing a 'new government.' At their first meeting in more than a decade, Zimbabwe's president and the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change yesterday signed a five-page 'memorandum of understanding' that envisages a fortnight of secret talks by representatives dealing with an array of issues from political violence against the opposition to constitutional reform."

A healthy democracy requires fair and reliable elections. It is everyone's responsibility to work towards this and to condemn any action that undermines it. People who have chosen other systems for their societies are excused, although we'd appreciate your help scolding obvious miscreants.

Looking for a Pern timeline
It looks like all the Pernverse groups on LJ are for folks who are either role-playing or doing fanfiction there.

What I'm looking to find out is, has anyone compiled a detailed timeline for the Pernverse?
Because if someone else has already done it I'd rather read theirs than do one myself.
